"Radical Root Preparation Method
The following root preparation method may seem radical and different to the conventional technique, but it has been used by the big commercial growers over many years. Existing growth on your tree may wilt for a day or so after planting but it will recover rapidly.
Place the tree in its container into a large bucket or bin. Fill with water and soak for 10 minutes. Next, slip off the container, making sure you do not damage the roots. Gently pump the tree up and down in the water to loosen and remove the potting mix, especially around the edges and bottom. Using your fingers, loosen and extend the roots.
Pump water in again until all the potting mix is removed. Loosen the roots on the bottom of the root ball and trim them if f they are too knotted, spiraling or growing at right angles. Keep the tree in the water while preparing the planting hole, but not more than a couple of hours.
This root preparation method will allow new roots to grow directly into the soil, thus avoiding the sudden change from the potting mix."
